We cannot take progress on social justice for granted

Our Chief Executive, Halima Khan, shares early reflections on her first six months at Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

Having been at PHF for nearly six months, I’d like to share some early reflections on our role in these changing times.

Since joining the organisation as Chief Executive in November, I’ve been listening to people inside and outside the organisation. In particular, I’ve heard how we’re pursuing our vision – of a just society in which everyone, especially young people, can realise their full potential and enjoy fulfilling and creative lives – and what we’re learning along the way.

What’s clear is that the work is as important as ever. Indeed, events around the world are reminding us that we cannot take progress on social justice for granted. It’s an ongoing endeavour that requires courage and tenacity, as demonstrated by the social justice organisations we are proud to support.

These organisations are also facing significant financial pressures alongside growing demand. It’s a challenging operational environment and means that increasing numbers are looking to independent funders like us for support. So, on our part, we need to continue to reflect on what we can do so that already-overstretched organisations can use their precious time to best effect.

It’s also clear that our ability to act over the long term is increasingly rare in a world that feels short-term and volatile. This capacity comes with a responsibility to be thoughtful about our role and creative about how we work with others. We’ve made endowments in previous years, offer core multi-year funding and increasingly collaborate with others in longer-term partnerships. We will continue to look for ways we can enable crucial work to endure over time.

Above all, I’ve been struck by the passion and commitment of our grant holders, partners and our staff. And I’m looking forward to working with everyone here and fellow travellers beyond as we, together, find ways to build a more just future.
