Visual Arts recipient 2026

Georgina Starr is a visual artist focusing on sound, moving image, installation and writing. Her work explores ephemeral and transient methods and phenomena — static, dust, air currents, ethereal field recordings, memory, cinematic illusions, esoteric occurrences and chance encounters. From these investigations, Starr creates a personal language and cosmology, which is developed into scores, librettos and scripts for multi-screen video and sculpture installations. Initially using her own voice and body, Starr’s most recent work has incorporated larger casts of performers, collaborating with composers, musicians, choreographers, singers, dancers and actors.

Starr’s latest work, The Discreet Dash (2025), is about listening: a long-form text presented as a novel, built around an empty hole and populated by the mysteriously hallucinogenic larvae of an extinct ancient species. The Discreet Dash was researched and developed over the last decade alongside performance works, including Androgynous Egg (2017) and The Triangles of Ursula (2024), and a film Quarantaine (2020–21). These large-scale works draw on aspects of alchemy, magic, alternative pedagogic practices and historical female mythologies, as well as exploring the cosmic egg as a symbol of ownership and female reproductive power.

Starr’s work has been presented in hundreds of exhibitions in the UK and internationally over the past 35 years, including at Tate Britain; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Kunsthalle Zürich; the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, the Venice Biennale, and Glasgow International. Recent exhibitions, projects, and performances include The Discreet Dash (2025), a novel published by JOAN Publishing; Rouge Brillant Silky, a performance commissioned by Hermès and presented in Paris and Shanghai (2025); and The Triangles of Ursula, a performance presented at Ex-Chiesa dell’Angelo Custode, Pinksummer Contemporary Art, Genoa (2024).

“A gift. A joy. A surprise. A shock.

A cool breeze in my hair. Freedom. A leap and a bounce.

A deep deep sigh. Relief.

The sky! The sky! The clouds!

Cicadas are singing. An owl winks.

Embraced by the leafy branches of an ancient tree.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Forever.”
