Stuart Hall Foundation
About the foundation
Inspired by the life and work of the eminent scholar and intellectual Professor Stuart Hall, the Stuart Hall Foundation (SHF) was launched in 2015 by his family, friends and colleagues to continue his life’s work and build on his unique and distinct legacy by attending to the urgent political, social, and cultural questions of our time. SHF’s mission is to popularise critical thought by supporting the creative and intellectual development of a new generation of artists, academics and activists who are dedicated to challenging issues of inequality through their work.
The Foundation advances this mission in three ways:
- Creating opportunities – offering artist residencies, commissions, scholarships, fellowships, and other opportunities to underrepresented people from a variety of backgrounds, creative and intellectual disciplines, and geographic locations.
- Convening Spaces – creating digital and physical spaces for the general public, and our network of artists, researchers, and activists to exchange and generate ideas together.
- Developing Digital Learning Resources – creating free-to-access digital learning resources that encourage critical thinking and interdisciplinary approaches to help the public contend with contemporary political and cultural issues (across arts, academia and activism).
“Stuart Hall Foundation want to support wider society to think critically about culture and social justice. Their work builds community for artists, academics and activists so they are able to engage in dialogue with each other, collaborate and find new ways to understand and confront major social justice issues.”
In 2025, the Stuart Hall Foundation was awarded a grant through PHF’s newly reopened Arts Fund. This funding supports the Foundation’s core strategic activities, which seek to enable wider society to think critically about culture and social justice.
The funding will support the delivery of a public education programme designed to equip a broad and diverse audience with ideas and insights that challenge harmful and oversimplified narratives around a range of urgent social, cultural and political issues, including the climate crisis, the rise of the far right, decolonisation, economic crisis, and immigration. Alongside this, the Foundation will develop free-to-access digital learning resources and provide a range of opportunities for artists, academics, and activists.
In addition, the Foundation is developing a new Community Engagement programme, expanding its commitment to public education through partnerships with a range of local, community-facing organisations. This programme will deliver seminars, forums, screenings, and reading groups in localised spaces, and will explore how the Stuart Hall Foundation can develop and share critical insights and approaches to social justice in collaboration with grassroots organisations.
