Alliance for Inclusive Education (ALLFIE)
Main project aims
The Alliance for Inclusive Education (ALLFIE) is a national Disabled Peoples Organisation (DPO) campaigning organisation advocating for all Disabled learners to be able to access and be supported in mainstream education. They work with Disabled learners, parents, and carers across an extensive range of educational needs, backgrounds, and experiences, and gain strength from that diversity.
ALLFIE believes that Inclusive Education is the basis of lifelong equality. Children who learn and play together will grow into adults who can understand and respect each other’s differences. Inclusive education is about a fundamental shift in the existing education system from seeing difference as a problem to be fixed to celebrating the diversity of learners and providing all necessary supports to enable equal participation.
ALLFIE lives and breathes the ethos of the Disabled People’s Movement: “Nothing About Us Without Us ”. With the support of funding from PHF’s Youth Fund, ALLFIE worked with young Disabled people on their ‘Our Voice’ project, giving them the chance to have their voices heard and amplified, and the space to share their experiences with education. The project supported young people to develop their leadership skills and activism, campaigning for a more accessible educational future for others.
Part of this project included a number of youth activism events, which highlighted the importance of giving young Disabled people opportunities to connect in person in a relaxed environment. These events aimed to make activism enjoyable, enabling the ALLFIE team to bring out the best in the young people, and themselves.
‘We learn and grow as a movement when we take the lead from young people.’
