Highlights of 2013

Our final news item of 2013 looks back at some of the highlights of another busy year for PHF.

Arts and the EBacc
Eight PHF trustees have written to the Times to express concern about the impact of the new English Baccalureate on access to the arts in schools

PHF hosts two-day community engagement discussion with Clore Fellows
Paul Hamlyn Foundation, in partnership with the Clore Leadership Programme and the Clore Social Leadership Programme, hosted a two-day ‘community engagement’ discussion with the current fellows of both programmes at its Leeke Street headquarters.

Right Here hosts showcase on young people’s mental health
Right Here, the PHF mental health Special Initiative, hosted an event on 4 February showcasing the work of its projects and other organisations in supporting young people’s mental health.

New Musical Futures pilot develops teaching methods for ‘free instruments’
While funding to music and the arts suffers cuts, and school music departments struggle for resources within schools, a pilot project from Musical Futures is focusing on the two ‘instruments’ that all school pupils already have: the voice and the mobile phone.

Carlos Saavedra reflects on US campaign for the rights of undocumented young people
Carlos Saavedra, a prominent activist for the rights of undocumented young people in the USA, highlighted the importance of developing a narrative and training people in conducting campaigns during a talk at PHF.

Opening event of Circuit programme at Tate Modern
Hyperlink, a major arts festival for young people, will take place in The Tanks and Turbine Hall at Tate Modern on 26-28 April.

Paul Hamlyn Foundation appoints Martin Brookes as new Director
Martin Brookes, previously Chief Executive of New Philanthropy Capital, has been appointed as the new Director of the Foundation.

Museums ‘bring more happiness than arts or sports’
The Happy Museum Project has published a report on the role of museums in fostering happiness and wellbeing.

New Streetwise Opera production at British Film Institute
Streetwise Opera, a charity that uses music as a tool to help homeless people move forward in their lives, presented its latest production, ‘The Answer to Everything’, at the British Film Institute.

Paper discusses routes to regularisation for undocumented children and young people
The PHF Supported Options Special Initiative has published ‘Routes to regularisation for people without legal status in the UK’. The paper gives an overview of possible paths to regularisation for irregular migrant children and young people within the UK’s immigration laws. It was written by Nadine Finch, a barrister at Garden Court Chambers.

£2.5m anniversary gift to widen access to performing arts venues
As part of its ongoing 25th anniversary celebrations, Paul Hamlyn Foundation is giving £2.5m to be shared amongst five performing arts venues across the UK.

Universe of Sound wins RPS Music Award for engaging new audiences
Philharmonia Orchestra’s Universe of Sound has received a Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) Music Award in the category ‘Audiences and Engagement’.

MAC-UK wins Ben & Jerry’s UK social enterprise award
MAC-UK, an organisation which supports the mental health of youth offenders, has won an international social enterprise award by Ben & Jerry’s. The panel selected MAC-UK as Ben & Jerry’s Top Social Enterprise in the UK.

Scottish Guardianship Service wins partnership award
The Scottish Guardianship Service has been recognised at the 2013 Scottish Charity Awards. It won in the partnership category for its collaboration between Aberlour and the Scottish Refugee Council, the principal partners in the guardianship pilot.

£1m anniversary gift to The Reading Agency
The Foundation’s final anniversary gift has been made to The Reading Agency.

Study on runaway children in India published
The PHF India programme has published a report on the lives of runaway children in India.

Week-long Learning Away residential at Hampton Court Palace
For the first time in its 500-year history, Hampton Court Palace this week became home to a group of school pupils who moved in for a residential trip. Eighty students from the Canterbury Academy lived on site for five days, taking classes from across the curriculum in locations throughout the grounds of the palace.

Clore Leadership Fellows for 2013/14 announced
Twenty eight Clore Leadership Fellows for 2013/14 have been announced.

Innovation Labs’ Doc Ready website launched
Doc Ready, a digital tool set up to help young people make the most of mental health-related GP visits, has been launched today.

PHF’s strategic review
We are embarking on a review of our work, with the aim of putting in place a new strategy for the Foundation.

New partnership between PHF grantees in eastern India
The Paul Hamlyn Foundation’s India programme has facilitated a partnership between grantees which is due to commence in October 2013.

All About Trans receives support for a new UK-wide project
All About Trans, a project that encourages greater understanding between media professionals and the transgender community, has received support from PHF’s Social Justice programme and Channel 4 for a new UK-wide project.

Awards for Artists 2013 announced
Five visual artists and three composers have been announced as the recipients of the 2013 PHF Awards for Artists.

National Music in Transition Awards 2013 winners announced
Four primary-secondary music partnerships have won Music in Transition Awards, in recognition of their work with music to support pupils moving schools.

‘Opportunities for young people’ resource published
A resource that provides a list of opportunities for young people has been made available.

Right Here wins Positive Practice Award
Right Here has won an award in the Mental Health and Primary Care category at The National Breakthrough Positive Practice Awards in Mental Health 2013, which celebrate excellence in mental health.
