Right Here wins Positive Practice Award

Right Here has won an award in the Mental Health and Primary Care category at The National Breakthrough Positive Practice Awards in Mental Health 2013, which celebrate excellence in mental health.

The award was presented, on 5 December at a ceremony in Sheffield, for Right Here’s work in developing radical new approaches to the mental health and wellbeing of young people aged 16-25. This age group is one of the most at risk of developing mental health difficulties but least likely to receive professional help.

Highly commended in the same category as Right Here were Wandsworth Psychological Therapies & Wellbeing Service and The Military Veterans’ Service – Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust.

As a result of the award, Right Here has now been approached by the NHS Confederation Network that wishes to include the initiative in their good practice guide for mental health services.

Right Here is a five-year, £6m Special Initiative by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the Mental Health Foundation, running from 2009 to 2014. It aims to develop new ways of supporting the mental health and wellbeing of young people in the UK, focusing on intervening early to help young people at risk of developing mental health problems and tackling the stigma associated with mental health that often prevents young people seeking help. Right Here operates across four different projects in Newham, Brighton and Hove, Sheffield and Fermanagh.

Right Here has recently published a paper that explores the growing body of evidence that supports the importance of its work and the need for radical change to how youth mental health is addressed. ‘A voice and a choice for young people’s mental health’ provides four case studies that give a flavour of the approaches that Right Here has adopted when addressing the mental health needs of 16-25 year olds, such as youth participation and co-design, prevention, early intervention, resilience-building and anti-stigma activity.
