Coming out, or being outed as LGBTQ+, can lead to young people being made homeless. 24% of homeless young people identify as LGBTQ+. Once homeless, LGBTQ+ young people are more likely to face violence and discrimination than young people who aren’t LGBTQ+. They’re also more likely to develop substance misuse issues and experience sexual exploitation. This can all take a huge toll on someone’s physical and mental health. 77% of the LGBTQ+ young people AKT works with believe coming out at home was the main factor in causing their homelessness and so it’s vital that they are supported in an environment that is inclusive and celebrates their identities in order to improve their life outcomes.

AKT supports young people – like Sam (they/them) – into safe homes, in a welcoming and inclusive environment that celebrates LGBTQ+ identities. Following a period of homophobic and transphobic abuse at home, Sam came to stay with their best friend. After an extended stay, the friend’s parents had to ask Sam to leave due to very limited space in the small home. Their friend’s mother was concerned that Sam would need to rough sleep as they had no safe place to stay.

She told Sam about AKT following some online research, Sam was able to work with a dedicated case worker to consider the positives and negatives of various housing options which they could access. Sam chose to find university accommodation to help with their studies. AKT was able to advocate for Sam and their situation to the university and Sam was successful in securing appropriate and safe accommodation. AKT provided funding of the equivalent of a deposit and one month’s rent to assist Sam with the costs.

“My caseworker at AKT is one of the most helpful and kindest people that I’ve met in regards to my homeless situation. I was never judged.  We could speak as if we already knew each other and found common ground and humour in our meetings. If he does this with everyone, please give him a raise. He is top tier!”
