Trevor Mathison

Trevor Mathison (born 1960) is an artist, musician, composer, sound designer and recordist. The defining feature of his work is the integration of archival material into his sonic practice, with the fragments combining to create fractured and haunting aural landscapes. Mathison was a founding member of the internationally renowned cine-cultural artist group, The Black Audio Film Collective (1982-1995) and was their composer, sound designer and audio recordist. He collaborated further with fellow founding member John Akomfrah, providing sound design for his documentaries The Unfinished Conversation, The Stuart Hall Project, and The Nine Muses amongst others.

He was also founder of a number of other experimental sonic groups, including the dub techno outfit, Hallucinator (1993-2000), the artist collective, Flow Motion (1993-2000), and Dubmorphology, a production and performance group with fellow media artist, Gary Stewart (2003–present).  Dubmorphology conceptualises, produces and performs sonic and visual events using site specific installations and large-scale ambient scores. His most recent work with Dubmorphology, Colony (2021), was a commissioned installation for the UnNatural History exhibition as part of Coventry Biennial.

Mathison’s recent work includes a sonic response to Lubaina Himid’s installation Naming the Money at CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art in Bordeaux, and participation in a digital sound clash between electronic musicians at the African Digital Innovation Festival, live-streamed between London and Johannesburg. His most recent works include a soundscape presented at the Courtisane Festival in Ghent, April 2022 and From Signal to Decay at Goldsmith’s CCA Gallery, his first UK solo show comprising an ambitious new sound installation and work made over the last forty years.

It was a shock to find that I had been nominated for the PHF award and an even greater shock to learn that my application had succeeded! I am deeply honoured. The PHF award affords a very special opportunity to artists and in this moment will provide financial support and breathing space at a very important time for me. Having a safety net that allows me to think about more ambitious projects without worrying about finances will be incredibly valuable. Most of all, it will allow me to invest time in my practice and for this, to the Foundation, the nominators, the judges and my collaborators, I wish to offer my profound thanks.
