New Year’s Honours – Jane Hamlyn awarded CBE for services to philanthropy and the arts

PHF would like to extend our congratulations to all those recognised for their contribution to society in the 2018 New Year’s Honours list.

In particular, we would like to offer our warmest wishes to our Chair, Jane Hamlyn who has been awarded a CBE for services to philanthropy and the arts. Jane has provided stability, leadership and good counsel to the Trustee Board and our staff since her appointment as Chair of the Foundation in 2004. Her continued commitment enables the Foundation to support over 600 grantees a year who are working hard to help people overcome disadvantage and reach their full potential.

At Paul Hamlyn Foundation, we believe that the arts are a force for change. But that change needs advocates who can offer support to the arts at pivotal stages, and it was pleasing to see that the citation recognises Jane’s contribution in this arena. At the Frith Street Gallery, Jane has an outstanding record of encouragement for the visual artists she represents, and at PHF she developed and launched our Awards for Artists programme in 1993. Today, the awards are the largest of their kind in the UK that are given to individual artists and are offered with no strings attached, giving artists freedom and space to create without financial pressure.

As Chair, Jane takes a regular and keen interest in how philanthropy can support people to make a real difference in their communities and potentially change lives. The potential of philanthropy to achieve change has been a theme in this year’s honours. We would like to acknowledge the contribution made by our many friends and partners in that effort and will continue to work with Jane and our Trustees to ensure that we are playing our part in pioneering philanthropy in the year ahead.
