Children in England to share their views with UN

The Children’s Rights Alliance for England (CRAE) has launched a project to enable children in England to share their views with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in 2015. Timed to coincide with International Human Rights day on 10 December, the project was kicked off with a social media campaign using the hashtags #CloseToHome and #childrights to raise awareness and encourage young people to sign up to take part via the CRAE website.

The hashtag #CloseToHome refers to the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, who was instrumental in developing the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. She said that human rights begin:

“… in small places, close to home … the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends … the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”

The hashtags reached over 50,000 twitter accounts during the day of launch, generating more than 1,000 visits to CRAE’s website.
