Roundabout Auditorium wins Theatre Building of the Year

Paines Plough’s ‘Roundabout Auditorium’ has jointly won the Theatre Building of the Year award at The Stage awards. The Roundabout Auditorium is a theatre-in-the-round seating 110 people that can be ‘flatpacked’ and deployed in a range of locations. The structure was unveiled at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2014 and is designed to tour the UK with an ensemble of actors, giving people the chance to see top quality theatre, no matter where they live. The prize was shared with the Liverpool Everyman theatre.

Theatre-in-the-round is considered a highly engaging way to stage plays, bringing the audience into the heart of the action. However, there are few suitable venues for this style of performance in the UK. The travelling auditorium means it can now be experienced anywhere there is space – including village halls, schools, warehouses and parks.

Paines Plough received £140,000 over two years from 2012/13 to support the development of repertoire to be performed in the new venue.
