COLE Helen

Total Breakthrough Fund support: £278,000

Helen’s Breakthrough grant was awarded in 2009 to provide core funding for her to set up her own Bristol-based independent production company In Between Time (IBT). IBT produces the biennial In Between Time International Festival of Performance and commissions and produces specially conceived artists’ projects and curated events. Helen pioneered the In Between Time Festival in her role as Producer: Live Art and Dance at Arnolfini in Bristol, and following earlier festivals in 2001, 2003 and then 2006, the fourth edition – the first produced independently by the newly formed IBT – took place in late 2010.

Since then, IBT’s story has gathered pace. In 2011 the company became an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, and it has produced events such as the Up to NatureFestival in a Forest in Gloucestershire, and Helen’s owninstallation We See Fireworks which continues to tour internationally since its premiere in 2011. In early 2013, the fourth In Between Time Festival once again took shape in Bristol, and the next Festival is planned for early 2015. Helen’s Breakthrough grant has been used as core funding, allowing her to start the company up and to build it to its current level of activity, and concluded in March 2014.
