Young journalist embarks on ’voice of a generation’ tour

Helen Whitehouse, a 19-year-old journalism trainee from Barnsley, has begun a tour of marginal constituencies across the UK to raise the profile of young people’s voices ahead of the general election.

The ‘Voice of a Generation tour’, in partnership with the Daily Mirror newspaper, is the culmination of a year-long project by British Future, supported with funding of £37,000 from PHF.

PHF has long supported work to get the voices of young people heard in policy debates, and by agencies and organisations that impact on their lives.

PHF Head of Social Justice Rob Bell said:

“We are delighted to work with British Future and the Mirror to make sure that the real voices of young people are heard by political parties in the run up to the general election. The approach we are supporting recognises that amongst young people there is enormous diversity and difference of views and opinion. Helen will capture and share this, and – we hope – challenge perceptions of young people as being disinterested in politics and social issues.”

The tour starts in Barnsley with events at a local college and YMCA centre. It then visits: Sheffield Hallam (27 Feb); Plymouth, Sutton & Devonport (2 March); Brighton Pavilion (4 March); London Hampstead and Kilburn (5 March); Cardiff North (7 March); Dudley North (8-9 March); Southampton Itchen (10 March); Thanet South (13 March); Glasgow Central (17 March); and Uxbridge & Ruislip South (19 March).

The tour culminates in an event in Parliament on Tuesday 24 March where young people from the tour will put their questions directly to MPs.

The Mirror has set up a website for all of Helen’s online writing from the tour.
