PHF Composer Award recipient at Proms

29th July 2010

Luke Bedford, a recipient of the PHF Awards for Composers, featured in a BBC Prom last night with a performance of his work 'Outblaze the sky' by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Oliver Knussen.

The work was programmed alongside works by other leading contemporary British composers Colin Matthews and Sir Harrison Birtwhistle.

The critic Barry Milligan, writing in the Evening Standard, described 'Outblaze the sky' as "a steadily paced six-minute piece that fleshes out each successive pitch with a penumbra of glissandi, harmonics, flutter-tonguing and tremolandi. The effect is of haloes of sound in another impressively wrought score from this composer".

Luke Bedford was named a recipient of the PHF Awards for Composers in 2007. More about him, and extracts from his works - including 'Outblaze the sky' - can be seen on the Awards for Artists website, via the link below.

This year's Awards for Artists, which will include five visual artists and three composers, will be announced in November.
