Paul Hamlyn Roundhouse Studios

On 3 October 2012 we announced a £5m endowment for the Roundhouse Studios.

The newly named ‘Paul Hamlyn Roundhouse Studios’ work with around 3,000 young people (aged 11-25) a year, providing opportunities for training in creative industries including music and video production, radio and filmmaking. The work of the Roundhouse – the iconic performance space in north London – feeds into the activities of the Studios, and the money raised by the Roundhouse business is channelled back into the Studios’ work with young people. Forty per cent of the opportunities at the Roundhouse Studios are used by young people whose circumstances mean they might not otherwise have been able to access them.

Our endowment will provide a financial cushion for the organisation, underpinning some of the running costs for its important work.

Jane Hamlyn, PHF’s chair, said at the announcement of this gift: “My father set up the Foundation in 1987 and we are marking the 25th anniversary in a number of different ways. Tonight is the first major gift we are announcing in Britain – and there could not be a more appropriate one. The energy, the drive, the desire to learn, the determination of the thousands of young people who make the Roundhouse their place every year embodies what the Paul Hamlyn Foundation believes in.

“We know that cultural and learning opportunities have particular significance when young people themselves are able to decide what to experience, when they are involved in the planning, the learning and training, and take part in different ways, as participants, mentors and leaders. What happens here in the Roundhouse Studios is extraordinary and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation is delighted to help underpin the long-term future of this wonderful place.”

Grace Huber, Station Manager of Roundhouse Radio, recorded a radio interview with PHF Director, Robert Dufton, on the relationship between the Foundation and the Roundhouse, and the significance of the gift.
